Coffee: Did You Know It's a Dynamic New Cooking Spice?

If you're a chef and in the know, you are probably acquainted with using coffee as a dynamic new cooking spice. If so, realize that you are standing on the edge of a growing new trend and your food creations are reaching 'next level' status.
As a creative culinary artist, you typically separate yourself as a chef by experimenting and stretching the bounds of your imagination by developing new realms for your art form. The results show up on the faces of those who eat your creations.
Using coffee as a cooking spice is a wondrous discovery. Considering the characteristics, taste subtleties, strength variances and different ways in which it can be used (the whole bean, as a liquid or grounded), it has created new breakthroughs for many dishes.
WHY COFFEE?
Coffee is arguably the world's most popular drink. It is plentiful and yields enough different flavor profiles to be the perfect crossover agent and find its way to the list of ingredients associated with food recipes.
QUESTIONS ABOUT THE NEW SPICE
The natural questions about coffee as a recipe ingredient are:
1. Will it make my food taste like the drink?
2. Will it dominate the other herbs and spices that I use?
3. Will it mask or ultimately change the flavor essence of my food?
To answer question number one, the growing list of chefs who cook with coffee as an ingredient have realized the natural rich, nutty and/or smoky flavors that have contributed to taking their dishes over the top. The note to remember is that your recipes should reflect coffee's presence as a spice in the cooking process.
As it relates to dominating other herbs and spices, you'll have to experiment if you are independently converting your favorite recipes. For recipes that you'll pick up via cookbooks or data bases, the ratio of coffee in your recipes have been worked out for you. As such, coffee as an ingredient will enhance the flavor profile of your dishes if used properly. Some recipes call for the coffee to be added as you would drink it (brewed), but some require the use of the whole bean or added in granulated form.
Regarding whether or not coffee will mask or change the flavor essence of your food, you should remember that spices serve to enhance flavor profiles in your food. Note that the lighter roasts are more delicate and are generally more acidic. The darker roasts are stronger and more robust and therefore work best in dishes where they must hold their own against other powerful flavors.
Coffee, the world's favorite drink, is now taking a bow in culinary circles as a delicious ingredient and marvelous contributor to deliciousness in dishes of all sorts.

There is good news for coffee lovers around the world. Fact is, it is easy to make iced coffee at home without the fancy machines found at your local java shop. By following the four easy tips below, you can enjoy your iced coffee drinks in the comfort of home.
Cappuccinos and mocha lattes continue to maintain their posture as popular coffee choices; however, consumers are discovering that their favorite beverage is just as tasty and certainly as refreshing when served cold.
According to the National Coffee Association and Mintel Research, the percentage of Americans who drink iced coffee beverages increased from 20 percent in 2003 to as much as slightly more than 30 percent today.
While enjoying a chilled coffee drink is a natural at your local shop, iced coffee can be as easy to prepare as iced tea at home. Your creativity and a variety of options will allow you to create personalized coffee concoctions that are just as delicious as those served in your favorite cafe. Those creations depend on how you use flavoring syrups, cold milk, chocolate and spices.
Some of the more popular beverages such as iced vanilla mocha, iced rum coffee and iced latte are easy to make at home. Below are four tips for creating those refreshing iced coffee drinks.
  1. Pour your flavoring syrup of choice into the cup first. To complete the drink, pour in espresso or your coffee of choice, then the ice and top it off with cold milk.

The Truth About Coffee and Your Health

I have always been a coffee lover and regularly enjoy at least 3 cups a day when I am working and a couple at weekends. I can live without it, but then again, I enjoy drinking it so why should I have to? There are always stories in the media about whether coffee is good or bad for you with an abundance of conflicting stories clearly contradicting each other. So, I thought I would do my own research and look into whether there is any truth in either argument. Here is my definitive conclusion on the effects of coffee.
Coffee gives you more brain power
It has long been recognized that coffee keeps you awake because of the high levels of caffeine. Caffeine is a stimulant that not only stops you from dropping off at awkward times, but it actually blocks some of the negative neurotransmitters to the brain. This in turn will make you more alert and improve your overall effectiveness. This I believe to be true but it can affect sleep and make you feel drowsy the next day if you drink too late at night.
Coffee helps you exercise - but make sure you drink water too!
I have found this to be true myself. After I've had a couple of coffees and then been in the gym around 2 hours later, I've definitely found it easier to do a big run or lift weights. This is again due to the amount of caffeine. Caffeine raises metabolism and makes you feel ready for a complete workout. What you shouldn't do is neglect the need for water. It is important you drink plenty of water during a workout and before to negate the other effects on your body of caffeine. What you have to remember is the coffee will make you urinate a lot more so make sure you are replacing essential vitamins, minerals and fluids.
Coffee and the Liver - good or bad?
When it comes to coffee's effects on the liver there are so many conflicting reports it is really hard to decipher the exact truth. One argument is that coffee is extremely good for the Liver as it can lower cirrhosis by up to 80% and there have even been studies linking coffee and the reduction of liver cancer. On the counter side of the argument studies have suggested coffee will interfere with the absorption of some drugs and antibiotics. Therefore, if you already have liver problems and are taking medication for it, coffee could make symptoms worse rather than better!
What is contained in Coffee?
Well apart from caffeine which is all anyone talks about, there are a number of nutrients and antioxidants in a regular cup of coffee. Some research have suggested that coffee has more nutrients in it than fruits and vegetables but there are also traces of vitamins such as B5, B2, Potassium and Manganese. That's the good side. On the bad side coffee is very acidic in nature which is not good for digestion and heart burn. What you also have to be aware of are the stress hormones that are contained in coffee. This can lead to hypertension and has been linked to high blood pressure.
Conclusion
From all of the research I found, most accept that drinking coffee in moderation is perfectly fine and can have very beneficial effects. Drinking large quantities (more than 4 cups a day) can have some damaging effects on the body. Drinking at certain times of day, like late afternoon and evening can also affect your sleep patterns which lead to other health complications. Proving cause and effect with any of these studies is complicated but there is no doubt coffee is a contributing factor in good and bad effects on the body.

Things To Consider When Buying A Cappuccino Machine

Cappuccino makers have a small difference with coffee makers because they use steam or pressure to force the water through the finely ground coffee. The pressure or steam in the machines can also be used in frothing milk. You will therefore have an added advantage when you have a cappuccino maker even when you have a coffee maker.
The machines come in different types and you might want to get familiar with the types so you are able to make a proper decision because each comes with its pros and cons. The most common machine types are steam cappuccino machines, pump cappuccino machines and pod machines. Whereas it is important to choose the most suitable type for your cappuccino making needs, there are general factors that should be considered when buying the best machine. These are the factors that will determine how valuable and useful your machine turns out to be.
Drink variety - Coffee beverages are in different varieties and when you choose a high end machine you are more likely to enjoy them. In essence, a quality machine will be able to make cappuccino, espresso and regular coffee. In most cases, a machine that can make specialty coffee beverages and regular coffee will come with separate coffee carafes and cappuccino cups. With a machine that can do different varieties, you can make several cups of different beverages in a single brewing to match your preferences.
Speed - How fast can the machine make your drink? The one advantage that comes with cappuccino makers is the speed in brewing drinks. They save you time compared to coffee makers, but the type of machine that you select will also determine the speed or amount of time it takes for your drink to be ready. Machines that are designed to automatically froth milk and add it to the coffee may take an additional small amount of time. It is also important to remember that pod machines reduce tasks that need to be performed, but at the expense of coffee quality that you get in the end.
Water supply - Removable tanks make better choices for cappuccino machines because you can physically and easily refill them without the need to pour the needed water into the hot machine. However, some models come with inbuilt water tanks and even though they are not as convenient, they still make it possible for you to brew coffee, cappuccinos and espressos all in a single brew. When thinking of water supply, choose a machine that can directly hook to your water line so you have an easier time filling the tank to make your favorite coffee beverages.
Self-clean ability - Modern cappuccino machines come with self-clean technology a feature that brings a lot of convenience to users. With such a machine, all you are required to do is pour special cleaning solution into your machines few times a year to de-calcify them. Some makers even have milk frothers that are self-cleaning so you don't have to worry about maintenance every time you use your machine.
When choosing the best cappuccino maker, features such as milk frothers, automatic grinders, solenoid valves and time displays should matter but you must also think about functionality requirements to choose the most convenient for your needs.

For making a great coffee, generally start out with contemporary beans. They should seem type of oily, they usually really should be potent. Make an effort to avoid extremely dry beans, any supermarket beans, and any beans that have been subjected to air to get a very long time. Your very best bet will be to possibly roast beans yourself or purchase them from a community roaster.

You can also use outdated espresso grounds to clean filthy dishes or clear your kitchen area counter rather than making use of chemical compounds.
Try changing to a new flavor of coffee if you are feeling down. Uncomplicated adjustments such as this might help encourage your mind and pull you away from your rut. Make certain to get time to delight in this specific cup and try to establish the new flavors. Preserve a number of sample packs as part of your cupboard to pull out for these exclusive instances.
Striving ingesting your coffee when it is for the most popular temperature possible. This is when espresso is at its best. If you permit coffee to cool as well as you reheat it, you will not get the same flavor from it that you would from drinking it while it was still fresh.
Brewing your personal espresso in the home can include up to enormous discounts any time you review it into the expenses of likely into an espresso store each day. For those who continue to keep it all around for much longer than which the good quality will begin to decrease.
Acquire a coffee grinder, and purchase full bean espresso. There is certainly no substitute to the flavor of freshly floor beans. You can still buy whole beans if you can't afford a coffee grinder. Before you leave the store, most supermarkets have grinders that you can use to grind your coffee purchase.
Any time you very first invest in your espresso maker, do a trial operate? What this requires is proper water flow through the coffee machine the same way you would if you were making an actual pot of coffee. This allows take away foul smells and any grime or dust that could have gathered inside the machine when it was sitting about the shelf during the store.

The Truth About Caffeine: Is It Good or Bad For You?

f you don't enjoy a morning coffee, I will look at you a little weird...
(Not judging or anything... )
Anyway, whilst coffee is delicious (in my humble yet completely accurate opinion), and whilst it'll give you some great benefits, it does have some drawbacks.
Now, I should make it clear, when I'm talking about coffee, I'm specifically talking about "caffeine".
Now we've cleared that up, let's talk about caffeine (I'm fantasising about coffee already - probably not a good sign - ha!)
So then, let's start with the benefits of caffeine:
1) You'll have an energy boost
The biggest and most well-known benefit of caffeine is, without a doubt, the energy boost you'll get from it.
Four hours sleep last night? No problem; just get a cuppa coffee.
Got a workout you're not feeling up for? Better drink up.
Suffering a mid-morning slump at work? Coffee-break time!
Quite clearly, caffeine has some pretty damn awesome benefits when it comes to giving you more energy. But (and it's a bigger "but" than Kim Kardashian's butt), it's not all good news. Though we'll go over this in a bit. For now, let's stay focused on the positives!
Anyway, the reason caffeine can boost your energy is because of this:
(WARNING: Boring science stuff coming up. I'll make it quick - something I'm unfortunately saying far too often lately... )
So then...
As soon as caffeine enters your body, it's already being metabolised by the liver and broken down into theophylline, theobromine, and paraxanthine. These chemicals then travel through the body, where they affect different functions.
How quickly caffeine is metabolised varies from person to person - you've got Mum and Dad to thank for this, because it's all in your genes. (Yeah, thanks Mum and Dad for making me nuts when I have a coffee!!)
Anyway, the most studied function affected by caffeine in in your brain. You see, caffeine is similar to a molecule called adenosine in your brain. The caffeine molecules bind to the adenosine receptors in your brain cells which stop adenosine from binding.
Now, you're probably thinking: "What the hell is adenosine?"
Good question. Let me answer it...
See, when adenosine binds to enough receptors, it signals the brain that it's time for sleep. But as I just said, when the caffeine molecules bind to the adenosine receptors, the adenosine can't bind to anything.
So what does this mean? Quite simply, your brain isn't getting the signals that it's time for you to sleep.
So then, does that mean you can go without sleep for good, just by downing coffee all day?
Definitely not. After all, Freddy Krueger wouldn't have been half as scary if people could actually survive without sleep...
So, caffeine doesn't replace your need for sleep. It just covers it up.
Also, when adenosine is blocked by caffeine, your dopamine system starts working more efficiently. Dopamine is a neurotransmitter in your body which is basically what helps you feel good. So that's another benefit of caffeine right there.
2) Caffeine is a form of nootropic
A form of whaaaaaa'?
Nootropic.
Nootropics are substances which alter your brain chemistry. Benefits include better creativity, mental focus, and much more. And, yes, caffeine will give you these very benefits.
3) It speeds up your metabolism, so you'll burn more fat
Just as it says on the tin.
Obviously a great benefit if you're trying to lose weight.
Sooooo... What are the NEGATIVES of caffeine?
1) It's a drug
Meaning you can get addicted.
Which isn't good news, my friend. Clearly, too much is gonna be bad.
There's a few reasons why:
For starters, you'll need more and more caffeine to get the same benefits. This'll screw up your ability to sleep, your natural energy levels, and much more.
Like any drug, if you then don't take the amount of caffeine your body gets used to, you'll "crash" big-time. You'll be lacklustre, energy-less, tired, irritable, and just generally feeling rubbish.
Good luck then being productive at work!
2) You could suffer from anxiety
If I have more than 2 cups of coffee a day, I become very anxious.
It's horrible.
I remember there was a time when I was downing 3 or 4 cups a day. I literally had really bad anxiety. I believed everyone was against me.
Not cool.
When I reduced my coffee, I almost immediately felt better (aside from a few headaches, but hey, you soon get over them)!
3) Heart problems
When I was 21, I went into hospital with a heart problem.
I was there for 3 days; diagnosed with a condition called myocarditis - an inflammation of the heart. Wasn't nice.
I was at university in Coventry. I was laying in bed struggling to breathe. I just felt really weird.
Anyway, I eventually got to sleep around 2am. Then BOOM. Woke up again at about half 4. My heart was pounding like mad.
So I went to the hospital and the doctor said: "Don't worry, but we're gonna treat this as the most serious case."
Seriously? Did he really say "Don't worry"????? I was bricking it - probably making my heart rate go even higher!
Clearly, I lived to tell the tale. And everything's all good now - more than good in fact. But I was drinking a lot of caffeine around that time, so that probably played a part. The doc then said to stay away from ALL energy drinks for life. He said they had a lot of patients come with heart problems after they'd downed a few of these.
So lesson learned:
Too much caffeine can be bad news. Seriously bad news.
4) Insomnia
Sleep is important.
Yes, I know you know that. But are you really getting enough of it?
If not, then you're gonna have a ton of problems. Things like not being able to concentrate, not being creative, feeling beyond lethargic, and just looking ill and unhealthy with oily skin and big bags underneath your eyes. Not nice.
Too much caffeine will just screw with your sleep, for the reasons I mentioned earlier.
So... Should you have caffeine or not?
In all honesty, a cup of coffee a day won't do you any harm at all.
In fact, it will give you some of the great benefits we've gone over.
Personally, I have a cup about once every two or three days. Just means that when I do drink it, it works a treat.
Now, what if you're already addicted to caffeine? What if you can't function without it?
Honestly, I recommend going cold-turkey. Seriously.
Just for a couple of weeks.
Then you can start drinking it again (just in much smaller amounts). If you do this, you'll feel bad at first. But after about a week, the headaches will go and you'll feel much better. Just view this time as a way of resetting your body to its natural state. Your natural energy levels will skyrocket, and you'll no longer need caffeine to function.
One final thing:
Try not to have any caffeine within 10 hours of going to bed. Just because it takes a while to leave your system.
Happy drinking,

Coffee Shop On Wheels - How About Parking At a Rest Stop for Weary Travelers?

One thing us retired entrepreneurial company founders like to do is think up new potential start-ups. Luckily for me, I've started a little think tank that has several of us on board. Lucky also for you, if you want to start a business, we don't mind sharing our ideas with you, heck maybe you can get some funding and make a go of it, do something great, fill a niche and be the next successful start-up entrepreneur out there. I wish you well.
Okay so here is a recent idea we came up with, actually it is an old idea, rehashed. There have actually been some franchises that do this. This has a different twist. Do you know how rest stops along the highway sometimes have vendors selling food? Usually, someone has a deal with the state and gets a license to do business there? How about a mobile food truck that serves up Lattes, Mochas and Espresso - high-end coffee?
One of our think tankers suggested we call it "R and R" and try to get it licensed in all states.
Indeed, there are mobile restaurants in every state almost - some have purposely made it tough on the sector due to restaurant industry lobbyists. I like the name idea, and I had once prepared a business plan for my brother's company - the potential company would have been named Jumping Java - with on-site corporate parking lot delivery. The runners would take the orders and deliver the coffee inside the company. R&R might be a good name, but some people drink coffee to pep-up and not to rest or relax, so that might not be the right name. Unless you told them the name was for "Ramp-up and Race-Forward" or something. Well, it would be a huge logistic nightmare, you'd need commissaries for the mobile units, home bases, required by law.
You'd need permission where to park, licenses in every city, most cities have ordinances for what they might deem street vendors thus, controlling when and where you can set up. Each state is required by law to send it out to bid, and then the lowest common denominator, minority company paying ridiculously low wages would be competing with you while their employees lives 10 people to a house, and they got a 15% bid advantage for being a minority or woman owned business, and an SBA loan, that others could not get.
Then the government would PR the crap out of it telling everyone how some Bozo Congressman was providing jobs. It would be a nightmare to deal with the state. Worse, they often close the rest stops for no reason, and you'd be out of business for that time period. Then there is the crime issue, and angry people that the bathrooms are not cleaned, even though that isn't your fault. You should see the stuff that goes on at rest stops. Although having someone there selling something does add a level of safety, because people are there.
One think tanker noted; "Sometimes there are people giving free coffee at rest areas trying to make their roads safer."
Yes, I've seen that, and I am in favor of it. Maybe the state would pay for just plain "free black coffee" and you could sell the higher-end coffee drinks or, the state gives you free rent, if you give the cheap black coffee out for free and then are free to sell the expensive stuff. Be Great, Don't Hesitate.

Cleaning a Coffee Maker - How to Use Vinegar to Clean Your Coffee Pot

Did you know that you can use plain old white distilled vinegar to thoroughly clean your coffee maker? That's right. You don't need to use chemicals that could potentially poison you to clean the inside of your machine.
How do you know if you need to clean it?
You'll know it's time if your coffee starts tasting more bitter than usual or it your coffee just tastes bad all the time. Also, if your coffee takes longer than usual to brew, it's also a sign that you need to clean it.
If yours is a Keurig type, then you'll see grounds from previous brews begin to show up in your new cups.
Using vinegar to clean your coffee maker is actually very easy. And it's a totally safe method of cleaning.
Here are the steps for cleaning with vinegar.
Fill your water reservoir with vinegar. You can use undiluted vinegar for full strength cleaning or you can dilute it.
Run enough brew cycles to completely empty your water reservoir. For drip coffee makers, it just takes one cycle. For Keurig type, you'll need to keep running cycles until you use up all the vinegar.
Brew another cycle with just water. When you are done with the vinegar, brew one more cycle with just plain water. This will flush out the vinegar from your coffee maker.
Repeat these steps on a regular basis to keep your coffee maker running great. And if you haven't cleaned yours in a while, you may need to run more cycles with the vinegar until it comes out clean.
How do you know if it worked?
You'll know that it worked when it brews smoothly and doesn't take forever. Your coffee will also taste fresher.
For Keurig type coffee dispenser machines, you won't see coffee grounds anymore. And even if you do, it'll be much fewer and only come from the current cup you're brewing.
How often should you clean it?
It all depends on how much you use it. If you use it everyday or several times a day, then you may want to clean it once a week. If you use it on occasion, then you may only need to clean it every few months.
Also if the water in your area is hard water, then you'll need to clean it more often too as lime deposits build up more quickly in these areas.
